Choose a vertical or horizontal packaging machine around product feeding and the required finished pack. Vertical form-fill-seal (VFFS) may suit a dosed loose product; horizontal flow wrapping may suit individual items. However, horizontal packaging is not limited to flow wrapping: horizontal pouch forming and filling systems are another category.

Describe the product and finished package together before selecting a machine name. Coffee as granules, ground powder or a prepared single item can require different handling and packaging arrangements.

How does a vertical packaging machine work?

In a VFFS arrangement, film passes through forming equipment around a vertical tube. Product is dosed from above, and sealing and cutting complete the pack. Siemens' VFFS application document describes these as separate machine functions.

This arrangement can be considered for rice, pulses or suitable powders, but the dosing equipment still needs selection. An auger may suit a powder while another product requires a suitable weighing or feeding system. A vertical bagger does not automatically solve the dosing problem.

Which products suggest horizontal flow wrapping?

Flow wrapping transports individual products or prepared groups horizontally while film forms around them. Biscuits and bars are possible starting applications. Viking Masek's flow wrapping explanation provides a manufacturer example.

Spacing, size changes, fragility and reliable entry into the film matter. Sticky or irregular products may need trays, carriers or different feeding arrangements. Before comparing headline speed, establish how products will arrive consistently.

Can powders or liquids use a horizontal machine?

Yes, with a suitable horizontal pouch forming/filling system. This does not mean pushing loose powder into a biscuit-style film tube. A pouch may be formed and transported horizontally while being filled from above. Omron's HFFS case study illustrates that distinction. Mespack's H series is another manufacturer example of pouch-format options.

Premade-pouch filling is a separate choice. Asking for a stand-up pouch alone does not define the machine: will it be formed from rollstock or fed ready-made, and does it need a zipper or spout?

Use product and pack examples to narrow the choice

  • Loose granules in a pillow bag: Consider VFFS combined with a suitable dosing unit.
  • One biscuit or bar: Consider horizontal flow wrapping with repeatable feeding.
  • Powder in a reclosable stand-up pouch: Compare systems that form that pouch or process premade pouches, together with dosing.
  • Liquid in a spouted pouch: Specify pouch, filling and closure together; vertical versus horizontal alone is insufficient.

What should film and sealing trials check?

Two films with similar dimensions may need different sealing conditions. With the actual film, check pack length, print-registration tracking, seal appearance and product contamination in the seal area. Establish suitable temperature, contact time and pressure by testing instead of copying settings from an unrelated package.

If seal integrity or barrier performance is required, make it an acceptance criterion. An attractive-looking package does not prove the required protection.

Which machine is faster or cheaper?

There is no reliable comparison without specifying product and package. Compare quotations using identical dose, film, acceptable packs per hour, changeover and stop conditions. Film travel speed and saleable finished packs are different measurements.

What samples should a machine enquiry include?

Prepare product samples, target weight or count, a finished pack or dimensioned drawing, film information, required output and the line layout. For powder applications, see our powder filling and weighing guide. Kedi Machine can evaluate a new machine or the PLC, HMI and synchronisation software of an existing line as separate scopes.
